Mumbai Districts AIDS Control Society (MDACS) was established on 27 th July 1998 by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the control of HIV/AIDS and the implementation of NACP in Mumbai metro alone. A separate society has been established to take care of the rest of Maharashtra.

The working of this society is governed by the policies formulated and adopted by the Governing Body of MDACS and implementation is done through the decision taken by the Executive Committee of MDACS. However, the Executive Committee and Governing Body of MDACS work within the framework of rules, regulations and policies issued by NACO, Govt. of India.

Mission

In a nutshell, MDACS' mission can be summed up as a four-pronged strategy:

  1. Prevent the spread of AIDS.

  2. Reduce the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS.

  3. Alleviate the socio-economic and the human impact of the epidemic.

  4. Provide care and support to those infected and affected by the disease.

Objectives

The broad objectives of MDACS are similar to the ones of the National AIDS Control Programme.

    • To bring down the prevalence rate of morbidity of Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI).

    • To implement Syndromic Management for Sexually Transmitted Infection.

    • To raise awareness, improve knowledge and understanding among the general population about AIDS infection and STD, routes of transmission and method of prevention.

    • To promote desirable practices such as avoiding multi-partner sex, condom use, sterilisation of needles and syringes, and voluntary donation of blood.

    • To mobilize all sectors of the society to integrate messages and programmes on AIDS into their existing activities.

    • To develop and support IEC needs of NGOs working with various focused groups.

    • To create a supportive environment for the care and rehabilitation of persons with HIV/AIDS.

MDACS' numerous activities and programmes can be broadly classified under five main components

Priority Targeted Intervention Against HIV/AIDS Preventive Interventions for the General Community Low Cost AIDS Care Institutional Strengthening

      Intersectoral Collaboration
