Globally 40.3 million People Living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2005 (nearly 50% women). 8.3 million infections in Asia. 5.1 million in India at the end of 2005. High prevalence in six states. 90 % of the reported infections from the most productive age group of 15-49 years. India has 0.8 % prevalence among adult population. A mere. 1 % increase in prevalence rate amounts to 500,000 new infections in India.

Out of global 40.3 million people estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS, 26 million are workers. 

Workers are dying because of HIV/AIDS.

By 2000, 13 million labour force participants died of AIDS.

17 African countries projected to lose more than 10% workforce by 2010, and 19 countries by 2015

 Workers losing capacity to work

0.5 million PLWHA world wide were unable to work in 1995. This will rise to 2 million by 2005; and 4 million by 2015, if access to treatment is not ensured.

ILO collaborated with MDACS for Workplace Intervention Program (WIP) In August 2002.

The program was started with following objectives:

Objective I: To institutionalise Workplace HIV/AIDS programme in all  selected Public & Private Sector enterprises in Mumbai.

Objective II: To create Master Trainers/Peer Educators through Training of Trainers program

Objective III: To assist in forming a nodal committee and provide teahnical support for formation of HIV/AIDS Workplace Policy.

Objective IV : To develop and support interventions for the informal sector i.e truck drivers, migrant workers and construction labours through NGOs & Unions

Objective V: To provide Technical support in the form of IEC, Resource Person and training of Doctors for ART & Other Updates.

Objective VI :  a system of programme management and documentation

  • Achievements :

    1. Program institutionalized in no.of Public sectors like MMC, BEST, Mumbai Police and RBI for employees and family members.
    2. Totally 950 Master Trainers & Peer Educators trained
    3. A Nodal committee and HIV/AIDS Workplace Policy developed in MMC, BEST, Mumbai Police and RBI.
    4. Research studies like KABP conducted for the first time for construction workers and a unique study for Jail Employees and prison inmates has been undertaken.
    5. A survey initiated at the J.J. ART Center to study the Effectiveness of Antiretroviral Treatment in improving Health and Productivity of People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLHA).
    6. A VCCTC with DOTS center started at Nagpada Police Hospital.
    7. Develop and strengthen referral linkages with the existing services like VCCTC, PPTCT, CCC, DIC, STI / RTI etc.
    8. Developed IEC in local language i.e. Marathi & HIV/AIDS syllabus for the Police and Seafarers Recruits.
    9. Sensitized a number of Public Sector for social responsibility towards the society like BEST – every year paints HIV/AIDS educated slogans on their buses and has also agreed to print same on their electricity bills and bus shelters.
    10. Advocacy which has led to ensure political commitment like HIV/AIDS Workplace Policy was released by the Hon. Home Minister and had also announced on the same day a budget for free ART to be given to Mumbai Police employees.
    11. Currently we have collaborated with Western Railway, Central Railway , Crompton Greaves, ICICI one Source.
