PPTCT
In
2001, during the UN General Assembly Special Session ( UNGASS)
on HIV/AIDS, the member states committed themselves to reducing
the proportion of children infected through mother to child
transmission (MTCT) by
20% and 50% by 2005 and 2010 respectively. Since then , globally, a large number of countries including
India have launched Prevention of
Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) programs . However,
by the end of 2003, only 8% of women globally had access to
PMTCT services and two thirds of all countries implementing
PMTCT programs had not passed the 20% coverage mark.
In
India, feasibility of implementing Prevention of Parent to Child
Transmission Services (PPTCT) services was studied in 5 states.
Then, PPTCT interventions were launched in six high prevalence
states including Maharashtra in November 2002 through the
existing MCH services. Scaling up of these services has been
planned in a gradual manner starting from medical colleges in
high prevalence states and going to district hospitals in these
states ; followed by medical colleges in low prevalence (
vulnerable) states and district hospitals in these states. The
ultimate goal is to provide PPTCT services to the populations at
the village level.
As
of May 2006, Mumbai has scaled up the PPTCT services in 45 centers:
1
Government Medical college,
3
Municipal Medical colleges ,
